Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej Now Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born November 12, 1961. She was the first Romanian to be awarded a score of 10 for an Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi is a Romanian gymnastics instructor, who later became the coach for Comaneci, first discovered Comaneci at the age of six. Comaneci participated for the first time in the 1969 national junior championships. She finished 13th. Following that, she was crowned champion. In her very first international competition in 1972, she won the event by winning three gold awards. When she made her debut as a Senior in the year 1975, she defeated Russian Lyudmila Turkishcheva, the five-time European champion who won four gold medals and one silver. She was the first woman ever to successfully perform reverse double saltos while dismounting from an uneven parallel bar.
